CONSCIOUS FASHION

What we wear matters!!

It might come as a shock to you that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industry and is a major contributor to water pollution , plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This leads us to only one option - Sustainable fashion. If we don't switch to sustainable fashion we are doomed for the years to come. Making a conscious decision to shop sustainable brands or thrift shopping will go a long way in restoring the beauty of planet Earth and people.

To simplify the above let us first understand what is sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion refers to an approach of sourcing, designing and manufacturing of clothes in a fashion which maximizes the benefit of the industry and society and at the same time minimizes the negative impacts on the environment. It includes using organic fabrics and materials , biodegradable and natural dyes to engineering patterns that leads to minimum to zero waste.

With the evolution of fashion 'Fast Fashion' became a trend. fast fashion focuses on quick production and thereby lowers the cost to bring in the market new trends inspired by celebrities or models. The low costs tempts the buyers into hoarding clothes in their wardrobe even if its not needed. Fast fashion has taken wings because of cheaper and speedier manufacturing and marketing process. It quickly attracts customers as it fulfills their appetite to be wear what's trending at extremely attractive price and instantly fulfils their gratification for trending fashion. fast fashion introduces new collections and lines on an orderly, seasonal basis thereby challenging many established clothing labels . The garments are carelessly made which means it is associated with pollution and waste causing very harmful and adverse effect on the environment and the poor quality leads it be worn our quickly or it is not even fit to be worn multiple times.

It's time now to radically design fashion by switching to recyclable fabrics and materials wherever possible. How we can contribute is by keeping our clothing in use for a longer period, donating our unused clothes to those in need and by shopping at thrift stores or consignment stores. This will eventually lead to positive environmental, social and economical outcomes.

While many large brands have making a huge shit from fast fashion to sustainable fashion, Pink Wynk has chosen it's way to sustainability with it's online consignment and thrift store where you can constantly recreate your style by creating less waste. It is India's first online platform to deliver a modern resale experience for women's second hand apparel wile assuring cent percent quality. In an age when cheap clothes and fast fashion have led to a throwaway mentality , second hand shopping is a shining beacon of light. Not only is thrifting good for the environment but also good for your wallet and your wardrobe .

The question is how can you and me support sustainable fashion?

It might be overwhelming at first with a multitude of factors to consider but due the rise in demand and more awareness and education on sustainability many brands are now integrating more organic and ethical fashion.

*While shopping look for more biodegradable and environmental fabrics like silk, linen, cotton, etc over nylon, polyester or acrylic. Shop from brands with are locally made which use recycled , up-cycled ,deadstock materials and natural dyes . Fast fashion is cheap but is meant to be thrown away quickly, be a responsible consumer by taking care of your clothes to prolong their lives.

*Choose quality over quantity. Buy high quality and durable clothes that do not get worn out quickly and you can wear it over the years even if it is a little more costly.

Donate your unwanted clothes. Instead of just hoarding or hanging clothes that you don't wear in the cupboard you can donate it those you need it , this way you are making your clothes sustainable to them.

*Shop at thrift stores. Designing, production, branding, marketing and distribution of clothes consumes a lot of resource and water which takes a toll on the environment. Also, disposing of clothes leads to piling of waste which can be hazardous and take years and years to degrade.

Thanks to thrift stores which operates on the slogan 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. One of the best benefit of thrifting is low price for good quality. You save money and get amazing deals too.

There is huge choice of clothes, bags and shoes with variety of styles , which can help you with can help you get creative by mixing and matching clothes and accessories to create your own personal style. By giving life to a second hand clothing you are also contributing to save the planet.

Next time you are planning to shop, instead of ending up spending huge amount of shopping malls try thrift stores. This way you will not only find some rare, beautiful and vintage collection for yourself but also save a lot of money without causing a toll on the environment.
